A Day Of iSeries Navigator, Life after Ops Nav
With IBM’s Robb Wiedrich

This one-day seminar explores issues and techniques that will help you develop applications to be ready for the browser as well as the legacy on your AS/400 and iSeries using the latest and best methods.

We start the day with: iSeries Navigator, Overview. You've heard about iSeries Navigator, right? But maybe you haven't had the time to learn much about it. Or maybe you haven't heard about our UI for the iSeries at all. If so, this is the session to help get you started understanding this powerful and productive user interface for daily operations and administration. We'll explore iSeries Navigator and learn how to access the functions inside it. We'll also take a quick tour through the capabilities offered by the UI up to and including our latest release.

Then we look at the iSeries Navigator, How to be a SUPER HERO! Want to be a SUPER HERO? Well, then you need special powers. In the world of iSeries, there is one place you go for the coolest, sleekest, most amazing special powers: iSeries Navigator. Find out how to fill your utility belt with the most powerful features of iSeries Navigator. From "hidden" power techniques to graphing, from interactive artwork to truly intelligent interaction, iSeries Navigator will enable you to swoop in and save the day, making you the super hero of your shop!

Next, we explore iSeries Navigator, Monitoring the Health of Your System. Have you ever wondered who is hogging all the system CPU? Need to know immediately when an inquire message is sent? Or need to know when your server job ends? This session will show you ways to have your system monitor itself so you can focus on other aspects of your job. We will also discuss additional options to keep you informed when you are away from your desk using wireless technology (phones and PDAs) and simple web browser!

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  1. Get an understanding of why being proactive can save you time.
  2. Learn about what types of integrated monitors are available in iSeries Navigator.
  3. Complete scenarios demonstrating use of each monitor.
Next it’s on to iSeries Navigator, Managing Users and What They Access. Managing users and what they access on your iSeries has never been easier! This session will show you how iSeries Navigator will simplify the task of managing your users and what applications and objects they access on a single iSeries as well as across your iSeries network. Using wizards and drag/drop capabilities, iSeries Navigator gives you powerful functions that allow you to complete one simple step on the GUI that results in multiple steps being performed on the iSeries.

In this session, you will learn how to:

  • Manage users (and groups) on one or multiple iSeries simultaneously
  • Use Application Administration to restrict access to iSeries Navigator, iSeries and client applications
  • Manage authorization lists and object authority for iSeries resources.
Finally, we will be reviewing iSeries Navigator: Send Without FTP! Do you create tools or commands to make your job easier? Do you need to deploy and manage these tools when you need them on multiple systems? Is having multiple systems to manage these tools and software causing multiple problems for you? You've come to the right place. This presentation will show you how to use the functionality you already have in iSeries Navigator to make managing your software and data easier.

You'll learn how to:

  • Obtain a basic understanding of Package and Product Definitions
  • Build and use a Package including distribution
  • Build, distribute and install a Product
  • Manage Products on multiple systems very easily
Robb Wiedrich was the Toolbox team leader at IBM Rochester. For the last year, Robb has been leading a team of developers who are working on emerging internet technologies that involve doing systems management over the web.

He has spent the previous six years working on the IBM Toolbox for Java development team. The Toolbox team has been integral in promoting Java on the iSeries and making Java applications easier to access iSeries data and resources. A majority of todays Java applications are leveraging Toolbox API’s, including Websphere, iSeries Access for Wireless, iSeries Access for Windows, iSeries Navigator, and iSeries Access for Web.

Robb has written numerous articles for technology publications on the topics of Toolbox, JTOpen, and Toolbox Micro Edition. He is a regular presenter at COMMON and speaks at conferences and user group meetings.
