EGL - It's the Language for the System i You'll be Using in the Near Future!
with Joe Pluta

This one-day seminar explores the issues regarding the development and deployment of the latest in IBM's EGL Language and the latest in techniques and tools in developing in EGL for System i applications.

EGL is IBM's best kept secret in the System i community, but that's all about to change. This tool, with a long valued history in the mainframe world, has come to the midrange in a big way. In fact, IBM considers EGL so important to the future of the i that part of the V6R1 repackaging specifically created a new tool, RDi-SOA, which will bring EGL to the System i platform. Is it a 4GL? A web development environment? An application modernization tool? EGL is all that and more, and if you want to see it in action, this is the session for you.

Joe Pluta will not only tell you about the past and future of this extraordinary tool, but he'll even create EGL applications with you right on the screen.

We start off the day with The 50,000 foot overview of what EGL is, with just a little history but mostly focusing on what it does any why. Also an introduction to the various deployments (COBOL, Java, Javascript).

Next we'll see the language in action. Basic syntax, including records and data items, as well as the opcodes for accessing external data and programs. Then an overview of how to develop with EGL: how to use libraries to encapsulate logic, how JSP pages magically have EGL "handlers" behind them. And although we won't be attaching to an RPG program, Joe will show you the syntax and you'll see how incredibly easy it is to invoke RPG business logic from EGL, with no Java required!

Next we'll see a basic EGL JSF page being built. This is your standard browser application, which Joe will demo before your eyes using local data. Just that alone takes us to the edge of most other web enabling technologies and tools. But EGL has more to offer.

Next Joe will add a little AJAX to the page, and show how easy the EGL syntax makes it to incorporate this powerful technology. And then as a final icing on the EGL cake, you'll be introduced you to the next generation of EGL applications, the Rich UI. Depending on available time, Joe may even be able to create an application that displays a Google map using standard business data, all using just the EGL syntax.

Don't miss the opportunity to see this tool run through its paces as you watch! Learn how the Rational developers have positioned EGL to work seamlessly and efficiently with ILE business logic, and how it allows you to put a web front end on ILE business logic in just minutes; with no Java, no JavaScript, no HTML knowledge whatsoever! If you're looking for a road to the web, EGL may just be the express lane.

These are going to be very power packed sessions and we're going to be covering a lot of real estate.

Joe Pluta is the founder and chief architect of Pluta Brothers Design, Inc. He has been working in the field since the late 1970s and has made a career of extending the IBM midrange, starting back in the days of the IBM System/3. Joe is a pioneer in using WebSphere with the iSeries, and is one of the leading advocates and teachers of Java/RPG interoperability. Joe is also the author of several books, E-Deployment: The Fastest Path to the Web, Eclipse: Step by Step, and WDSC: Step by Step all deal with web enabling the iSeries and using the Eclipse and WDSC toolsets to do so.

This seminar starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 5:00 PM and will be held on:
May 22, 2008 at the College Park Holiday Inn in College Park, MD (Beltway and US-1).

The course fee is $295 for non-user group members and $250 for user group members. This fee offering is a special arrangement between Washington Area Midrange Users Group and MidAtlantic Midrange. Members of other AS/400 User groups may also apply under the user group rate.
