OS/400 RPG: It’s Not Just for Green Screens Anymore
This one-day seminar explores the issues regarding the development and deployment of the latest in V5R2 RPG and the latest in techniques and tools in developing RPG for GUI and web applications. We start the day out with A Brief History of RPG IV…Did you know that .... In this session we will look at a history of the RPG IV language and attempt to highlight some of the more interesting "goodies" that you may have overlooked. We will also discuss the role RPG can play in your future development plans. RPG IV can help you in many ways that you may not have thought of as you move your applications forward into the 21st century. We will look at just a few of them. We then move on to RPG IV: The Power of Prototyping. The prototyping support added to RPG IV to enable User defined procedures offers many other "hidden" benefits. For example it can be used to allow the compiler to check your program calls. Were the right number of parameters passed, and were they of the right data type and size? Prototyping can do all this for you and much more. Prototyping also opens the door to the wealth of APIs on your AS/400. For example, the C function library is shipped with every AS/400 - so a whole variety of functions are right there on your system just waiting for you to use them! We will show you how! After lunch we move on to Basics to the Web with RPG IV. This session will show you how you can convert printed reports to deliver them to your users via the browser. We will also show easy it is to extend the functionality of these 'reports' to include graphics and links to other applications. You will learn things such as: The basic HTML required to build simple pages; An easy technique using RPG IV Special files that allows you to convert a program in next to no time; How to extend the report content through the use of graphics; How to accept parameter from the user to control the report contents. And we finish the afternoon with: CGIDEV2 - IBM's Free Gift to RPG Programmers. This session will introduce you to one of IBM's best kept secrets - the CGIDEV2 tools. CGIDEV2 contains tools that can significantly simplify the task of writing RPG IV CGI programs and, best of all, the whole thing is completely free. We will show you how the tools work together to take the hard work out of CGI programming. We will also introduce you to IBM's Easy400 web site where you can find not only full working examples that use the CGIDEV2 library, but tutorials, downloadable source files and more. You will learn obtain the CGIDEV2 tools, the components of the toolset, and how to tap into the additional resources of Easy400. Jon Paris has been involved in the data processing industry for over 30 years. In 1988 Jon joined IBM's Toronto Lab. where he played a major role in the planning and design of the new RPG IV language. In 1994, he moved to the AS/400 Application Development Tools Market Support Group, where he was involved in producing educational and other support materials and services related to AS/400 programming languages and development tools, such as COBOL/400, RPG IV, CODE/400, and VisualAge for RPG. Jon left IBM and is now one of the principles in Partner 400 , a Consulting company specializing in iSeries Application Development education. Jon is a frequent speaker at user group meetings and conferences around the world. This course starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 5:00 PM and will be held on:
- and - October 22, 2002 at the Holiday Inn in College Park on US1 and the Beltway. The course fee is $250 for non-user group members and $200 for user group members.
