DB2 for i - What's New Come and find out how the latest DB2 features can help your IBM i databases and applications take a giant leap forward. You will learn how these new DB2 features such as advancements in the integration of SQL & RPG, transparent column encryption, Hidden Timestamp columns, and enhanced DB2 support for XML can be used to improve your applications and to reduce your application development time. You will also not want to miss learning about the self-learning and self-tuning capabilities of the SQL Query Engine and the productivity gains delivered by the enhancements to the DB2 OnDemand Performance tools in System i Navigator. The listed features are just a few of the exciting new DB2 for i capabilities being discussed.

Throwing Away DDS in Favor of SQL Would it be crazy to move your database definitions and access over to SQL? Are there any advantages besides using a more modern language? In this session, we'll compare the SQL and native IBM i interfaces for DB2 for i. In addition, we'll discuss methodologies for moving to SQL in a seamless manner. By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

• Understand the differences between SQL & DDS objects.
• Be able to move business logic into DB2 instead of writing application code.
• Understand the performance differences between SQL & Native I/ O programming interfaces.

SQL Stored Procedures - Intro & Advanced The support for SQL Procedural Language (SQL PL) in IBM i has become instrumental in application modernization and porting projects. The procedural language can be brought to bear in many different aspects of database processing. In this session, we provide an overview of the SQL procedural language and describe the major areas in which it can be used: procedures, functions and triggers.

In addition, this session will highlight recent advancements in SQL PL as well as performance tips and techniques.

The Power of DB2 for i SQL OLAP Features In the spirit of doing a LOT more with less programming, learn how to leverage the V5R4 and V6R1 SQL OLAP functions. In general, analytic functions are valuable because:

• They simplify the expression of complex but commonly asked business questions
• They are efficient
• They are fast compared to other methods of running calculations

Exploring IBM OmniFind Text Search Explore the newest indexing technology for DB2 for i - the IBM OmniFind Text Search Server. Come and learn how your applications can perform advanced, linguistic text searches on plain text fields as well as searches against rich text documents in formats such as Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

• Understand the differences between a traditional DB2 index and a Text Search Index
• Be able create a text search index and perform advanced text searches utilizing the index

Kent Milligan is a Senior DB2 for i consultant in IBM ISV Solutions Enablement for the IBM i platform. After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1989, Kent spent the first eight years of his IBM career as a member of the DB2 development team in Rochester. He speaks and writes regularly on various DB2 for i relational database topics.
