Mid Atlantic Midrange Seminar

MidAtlantic Midrange is proud to offer the next in our continuing education seminars, bringing you the best education and educators available in the iSeries world, and to do so at User Group Rates.

A Power Day of SQL and DB2 Technology
With Shantan Kethireddy from IBM Rochester

This one-day seminar explores topics that will help enhance your skill sets and abilities in SQL in the latest V5R4 technology environment. During this packed seminar we will be covering the very timely topics of:

Intro to SQL Query Optimization

What is the distinction between Science and Art, and how does it apply to query optimization? This session will define query optimization and will introduce you to the building blocks and the strategies that help to define the science and art of query optimization for DB2 for i5/OS.

The Science and Art of Indexing Strategy on i5/OS

On any platform, good database performance depends on good design. And good design includes a solid understanding of indexes and column statistics: how many to build, their structure and complexity, and their maintenance requirements. This is especially true for DB2 for i5/OS, which provides a robust set of choices for indexing and allows indexes and statistics to play a key role in several aspects of query optimization.

In this session, you will:

  1. Be introduced to the new DB2 for i5/OS statistics manager and its automatic collection facilities.
  2. Understand what indexes are important to the query optimizer for statistics.
  3. Be able to determine what columns in a table are the best candidates for new indexes.
  4. Understand what types of indexes (binary radix or encoded vector) they should be creating and how they will benefit the queries.
  5. Understand how to proactively and reactively leverage database statistics to get the best SQL performance.
  6. Understand what new tools are available to analyze your indexing strategy.
Feedback Mechanisms for improving SQL Query Performance

In this session, we present an overview of the feedback mechanisms that provide information on SQL requests, query optimization, query plans and SQL performance. You learn the relative benefits of each method. Plus you learn the highlights of the new capabilities delivered in the latest release of i5/OS and DB2 for i5/OS.

Hot off the Grill: new features in V5R4

Find out how to make your iSeries database sizzle with the newest DB2 for i5/OS features. You will learn how these new database features such as embedded SQL for free format RPG, Recursive SQL, and built-in OLAP functions can be used to improve your applications and to reduce your application development time. You will also not want to miss how to use the DB2 OnDemand Performance Center to analyze SQL Performance without the overhead of a database monitor and to receive system-wide feedback on Indexes Advised by the DB2 for i5/OS query optimizer. The listed features are just a few of the exciting new DB2 for i5/OS capabilities being discussed.

In this session, learn:

  1. About the most recent DB2 for i5/OS features and how they can be used.
  2. What future database features are being considered for DB2 for i5/OS.
Shantan Kethireddy joined IBM in 2001 after earning his Master of Science degree from the University of Iowa. He is currently a member of the IBM SQL Query Engine team and has worked on / lead several performance-related development projects. Shantan speaks frequently at System i technical conferences and acts as a subject matter expert in developing the DB2 for i5/OS course of study.

These seminars start at 8:30 AM and ends at 5:00 PM and will be held on:

April 23, 2007 at the Clarion Hotel at Richmond Airport, VA.
                                     - and -
April 24, 2007 at the College Park Holiday Inn in College Park, MD at the beltway and US 1.

The course fee is $285 for non-user group members and $250 for user group members. This fee offering is a special arrangement between Washington Area Midrange Users Group and MidAtlantic Midrange. Members of other AS/400 User groups may also apply under the user group rate.
