Mid Atlantic Midrange is proud to offer the next in our continuing education seminars, bringing you the best education and educators available in the iSeries world, and to do so at User Group Rates.
Life Beyond SEU - The New WDSc Toolset for RPG & COBOL Programmers WebSphere Development Studio client for iSeries - WDSc to its friends - is the new Eclipse-based workbench from IBM. Don't let that "WebSphere" word worry you. There are many tools in this toolset which have nothing to do with WebSphere or with development for the web. The best news of all is that if you're on V4R5 or later, you probably already have WDSc available to you at no extra charge!! We will spend the day concentrating on the specific tools in this toolset that are targeted to RPG and COBOL programmers. WDSc Introduction - We will start with an introduction to the overall WDSc package, including its support for Java and XML development. We will also touch on the WebFacing tool that IBM hopes you will use to move your green screen applications into the browser world, along with the web interaction wizards which can generate Java and JSPs for you, so you don't need to write Java code! CODE Overview - CODE is probably the most valuable tool for traditional developers - CODE, aka CODE/400. CODE is not a new tool, but until it became part of this "free" toolset, many shops either didn't hear about it or couldn't convince their management to purchase it. CODE contains tools that replace SEU, SDA, RLU and various flavors of debuggers with a Windows-based graphical environment. In this session we will introduce the component parts including the editor, designer, and debugger. Using the CODE Editor - We will start with the CODE editor, which adds its own unique features to the syntax checking and line command interface offered by SEU. It also offers advanced features such as context sensitive help that means the entire manual is only a keypress away, plus a local code verifier that works even when you are not connected to your iSeries. You can develop and maintain your host-based green-screen applications much faster with CODE and enjoy it more! It supports all the most popular AS/400 languages, both ILE and Original Program Model (OPM) versions. Once you try it you will soon wonder how you ever coded without it! We'll demonstrate for you some of our favorite features in CODE, so you can see for yourself just what it can do for you. Using CODE Designer - The CODE Designer is a GUI based editor for display and printer files. Yes you can use the same editor for both! Tired of typing quotation marks in SDA - use your mouse to drag the field to the new location. Can't keep your finger away from the backspace key? Never fear, designer handles it correctly and does exactly what you want. For coding of display files to get any easier it would have to do the whole thing for you. The CODE Distributed Debugger - It does everything that STRDBG and ISDB do and more. For starters it remembers your break points and monitor variables between debugging sessions. You can also temporarily disable breakpoints that you may want to reuse later. Multiple watch variables show up in their own window and can be directly edited. Remote Systems Explorer and the iSeries Perspective - We will also take a look at the new graphical replacements for PDM, and show you where IBM's vision for iSeries Application Development will be taking us. It is a very different style of development than we are used to with SEU and acknowledges that many iSeries projects include web and PC elements in addition to their RPG and DDS components. VisualAge for RPG (VARPG) - Next we will take a tour of VisualAge RPG, which allows you to create client-based applications that can stand-alone or interact with your iSeries pograms and data faster and easier than you ever imagined. So why not join us for an in-depth look at why the WDSc toolset can (and should!) change the way you do your iSeries development in the future. After all - you have nothing to loose but your application backlog! Susan Gantner joined IBM after 10 years of working in application development using both COBOL and RPG. She moved to the AS/400 Competency Center in Rochester in 1991 to specialize in application development and database. After 5 years in Rochester, Susan moved to the Toronto Lab, where she continued her focus on educating programmers in ILE and RPG IV. In 1999, Susan left IBM and is now one of the principles with Partner 400. She speaks to AS/400 programming audiences at technical conferences around the world and holds several speaking awards, including the Jim Sloan Technical Speaker award, and many COMMON Speaker Excellence Awards.. This course starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 5:00 PM and will be held on:
- and - May 20, 2003 at the Holiday Inn in College Park, MD, on US1 and the Beltway - and - May 22, 2003 at the Holiday Inn, Ft. Washington, PA.
