V5R2 Update and Review: The Best Ways to Develop with ILE & RPG on OS/400 This one-day seminar explores the issues regarding the development and deployment of the latest in V5Rx RPG and the Integrated Language Environment programming methods and techniques. We start the day out with RPG at V5R1 – Bigger and Better than ever!. This session presents the latest in built-in functions, full interoperability with Java, free-form syntax and much more. In addition, how to use MONITER function to simplify error handling, new capabilities to control file usages, how to call Java methods from RPG (and RPG from Java), using qualified data names, and how to code completely free-form calculation specifications. We then do a quick review of A Programmer’s Introduction to ILE to review and provide the necessary foundations for the additional session topics as you will need to understand ILE. After lunch we continue with RPG V5R2 in which we review the new features just added with V5R2. After this session, we continue the day with Static Binding Decisions and Activation Groups. In these sessions we will take a closer look at how you can most effectively utilize stating Binding. We will review the steps needed to utilize binding by copy and by reference. We will also discuss when to best utilize each type of binding available within ILE: both static and dynamic and how Service Programs can be most effectively used. With activation groups, you can protect applications form one another in a job and exercise more control over the runtime behavior of the applications. Consequently, the programmer has many more options available to be used. We will end the day with ILE Shortcuts and Pitfalls. In this session, we will look at some simple steps you can take to avoid many of the pitfalls that beginning ILE programmers experience. We will discuss which default values for parameters on commands related to ILE may cause you problems so you can consider alternative default values for your system. If you are about to embark on an ILE project, this session could save you time and headaches! This session provides a "cookbook" of things to watch out for and consider changing in your code if you find that you need to mix the two environments.
