A Power Day Of Programming Technologies for System i
With Don Denoncourt

In this seminar, Don will do a series of 30-45 minute presentations on the set of technologies that he feels should be well-understood by all developers. He will explain why each of the technologies is important, provide an overview, and show how you can get started with WDSc, RAD, and Eclipse. Don will also list useful web sites and show how to download and use open source utilities to work with each technology.

Cloud - Then presentation will introduce you to cloud computing with an emphasis on Amazon's cloud offerings. It will describe where you might being using the cloud and offer some getting started advice.

REST and Web Services - Everyone has heard about Web Services but did you know the easiest way -- by far -- to implement web services is with Representational State Transfer (REST.) This presentation will overview REST and describe why you would use this simple design mechanism over the more complex SOAP-based Web Services.

Regular Expressions - Regular Expressions is a powerful mini-language for text search-and-replace. With a little bit of understanding of Regular Expressions (RegEx) you can extremely quickly make far sweeping changes to code. You can also use RegEx in your application for dynamic validation and formatting. Learn how to use regular expressions in your favorite IDE (such as WDSC, RAD, and Eclipse) and from a variety of free text editors.

CSS and Page Design Standards - Most developers have picked up a rudimentary knowledge of HTML but many have not yet learned the basics of CSS. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is the preferred way of improving the look-and-feel of web pages. In this presentation you will learn the basics of CSS and be introduced to some CSS best practices. You will learn how to edit CSS in WDSC, RAD, and Eclipse and how to leverage the CSS developer tools available for Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Google Chrome.

JavaScript and Ajax - Learn how to use JavaScript (the language of the web) to dynamically manipulate HTML. Be introduced to the basics of this ubiquitous language. Also learn how to code JavaScript routines to perform Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) as you provide sophisticated and dynamic web pages. Don Denoncourt will also introduce you to the variety of available JavaScript frameworks with specific emphasis on JQuery.

XML and JSON - Extensible Markup Language (XML) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) are the two most prevalent data encoding formats used today for web applications. Learn how to use XML and JSON in your web applications to communicate between JavaScript and your server code (including RPG.)

Source Control - Everyone should be using source control. Don will introduce you to the development best practices that rely on source control. He will then show how to get started with free source control tools, specifically Subversion and GIT. Don will show how to use the source control tools from WDSC, RAD, Eclipse, and Windows Explorer.

Agile and Extreme Programming - This presentation will overview how the adoption of some of the principles of Agile and Extreme Programming can help your application development.

Don Denoncourt is systems and web consultant and lecturer focusing on Java, Groovy, Grails and PHP development and specializing on integration with the System-i.
