A Day Of Websphere and Webfacing
With IBM’s Alison Butterill

Which products are WebSphere products? Which tools are WebSphere Development tools? In June of 2002 IBM introduced a brand new way of doing development for iSeries programmers. This new suite of tools includes the traditional tools and compilers, but also adds new workstation components based on the eclipse technology.

This seminar will focus specifically on the Development tool environment, and most specifically on WebFacing. The agenda for the day will include the following topics:

  • What is WebSphere?
  • WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries (including what’s new as of the January announcement.)
  • WebFacing
  • RPG IV - V5R2 and Beyond
  • Moving to the Web From Traditional Applications

What is WebSphere?

WebSphere is IBM’s strategic platform for eBusiness. Are you confused about WebSphere? What is it? Which products are WebSphere products? What does that mean? This high-level presentation describes the family of WebSphere products which are available on/for the iSeries, including both the execution environments and the development tools. Includes a fast introduction to IBM’s eBusiness application model including the use of Servlets, JSPs and Enterprise Java Beans!

WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries

In June of 2002 IBM introduced a brand new way of doing development for iSeries programmers. This new suite of tools includes the traditional tools and compilers, but also adds new workstation components based on the eclipse technology. This session will explore the details of this announcement, as well as provide some background on why this newly enhanced tool, WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries will make the iSeries the best platform for development of any application - traditional or eBusiness.

WebFacing - The Web Enabler for 5250 Applications

WebFacing has a new release! If you have never seen WebFacing, and how it can easily turn a green-screen application into a Web application that is easily customized with industry standard tooling, then come and be amazed!! WebFacing is not a screen scraper, but a development tool that creates real Java objects that can be further enhanced and extended. In the latest release, there have been significant improvements to the WebFacing tool, based on the benefits of the Eclipse technology. Come and hear about how to put WebFacing to work for you.

RPG IV - V5R2 and Beyond

RPG IV continues to be enhanced. Since it's introduction in V3R1, IBM has continued to add support for features such as procedures. This session will review the latest and greatest enhancements to the RPG IV  language made in V5R1 and V5R2. As well, some of the functions that are being considered or explored for future releases will be covered. This is your chance to hear  about what’s been happening lately in the world of RPG IV.

Moving to the Web with RPG

See how RPG IV and ILE are an effective next step on your route to the Web, and how RPG IV can act as a effective business logic language for Web applications. This session will review the logical steps to  move from existing RPG applications to a browser based application and ultimately out to the Internet. Some Java and Web terminology will be covered, however, the focus will be on the IBM tools for moving from traditional RPG to Java and the Web.
