President's Message from Peter Maher

So what do you want out of YOUR users group?

As we begin the final push towards JAM '99 - the Tenth Anniversary JAM - I pause to ponder what next? While next year is still a few months away we on the board need to start planning for next year. What do YOU want from your users group next year? Specifically what can we do that will help you? I have to be honest none of us on the board has a monopoly on brains and we could surely use some help. We really do want to bring in the speakers you want to hear, and the topics that are important to you. But we can't do these things unless we hear from you. Oh we will still bring in speakers and they will be the best we can find (for example this month!) but what if we miss something or someone that is important to you? We don't claim to know everyone, although we surely know a lot!

Folks, as I said when I began as president, this is your group we on the board are merely entrusted with trying to keep it going. We NEED you to tell us what you NEED.

So at the end of this newsletter I have enclosed a short survey. Please take 5 minutes fill it out and send it back to me. For those of you who get this in email just hit the reply button fill it out and send it back.

As an incentive to send in your survey I will enter the name of every respondent in a drawing at the November meeting for a special prize. (it will be a good one!)

Put October 19th on your calendar you won't regret it!

This month we really are lucky to have as our speaker, fresh from COMMON, a really dynamic and yet amusing speaker. I really am greatly proud to present Andrew Borts! To present: Project Management - A Titanic Perspective This course analyzes parts of the most controversial sea disaster of our time in terms of a modern project, pointing out the unique failures that parallel projects in today's business world. As a bonus, Titanic Trivia contests could be aced from information being analyzed.

Board Elections

In accordance with the bylaws I am giving notice that our annual elections will be held at the October 19th meeting. Any current member may vote in the elections (you must however be in attendance.)

Additionally I would like all of you to think about placing your name on the ballot. I have been told by a few of our current board members that they will not be returning next year. This opens up a few spots and I heartily urge you to consider running. The work of the board is NOT hard or time consuming and actually, dare I say it, it can be fun! With a full board the work is distributed evenly and no one person is overwhelmed. We do ask you to attend approximately 3-4 board meetings during the year and we even provide the food. So give it some thought and if you are interested or have questions call me.

JAM 99 the Tenth Anniversary

Now is the time to get your registration in for JAM 99 " the greatest most fact filled day of the year".

If you haven't already please get your registration in to KB Soni as soon as possible.

See you at the meeting in College Park on the 19th!

-Peter
