President's Message from Peter MaherBig Things are Happening!By now most all of you should have received your flyer on the Charlie Massoglia RPGIV Seminar. We are very proud of the fact that we are able to present this seminar to you, our members, at a greatly reduced price. Now more than ever I feel that your membership in WAM is a great investment in your career. For only $100.00 you can come to every meeting, save $50.00 on this seminar as well as save $50.00 on JAM 99. I know KB will hate this but its almost like we pay YOU to be a member! Now is the time to take advantage before we wise up! One important fact that I left out of the Seminar Flyer is the fact that we will also provide lunch for all the attendees. So if you add that to the RPG IV book you will receive as an attendee you can see we are doing this as a huge benefit to our members. JAM 99 is shaping up to be the best yet! December 3rd is a day you simply Must mark on your calendar now. This year marks the Tenth Annual JAM and we are planning on this being the best yet! So far among those we have confirmed with are: John Sears, George Farr of theToronto Labs, Al Barsa who is returning for the second year in a row with all new sessions, JAM favorite Carson Soule, and as our Keynote Speaker Dr. Frank Soltis who is the ultimate "Mr. Insider" and will let us in on "The Future of Business Computing". As soon as we have the sessions confirmed with the speakers we will be posting the Grid on the web page, www.wash-midrange.org May Meeting This month on May 18th we are happy to welcome back Carson Soule. As those of you who attended JAM 98 already know, Carson has been one of the strongest supporters of WAM from its inception. I know that I always look forward to Carson's meetings because I know that I will learn something new as well as be entertained. Sneaky how he does it! Come out to College Park and if you get a chance thank Carson for all he has done for WAM. Re-Cap of April's meeting Last month we presented John Carr. John not only impressed us with timely tips and tricks but showed us how we can use RPGIV to utilize the IFS that is built in to our systems. Thanks John! The winners of the monthly drawings were: Joseph Shean & Barbara Zattiero - News 400 Gift Certificates, Niloofer Clark - Midrange Computing gift certificate, and Brett Wertz - The AS/400 Handbook. Congratulations to all! Ps. I have spoken to the hotel about the cold room and they promise to have it fixed by June. See you on the 18th! -Peter MAY MEETINGGraphical Application Development on the AS/400with Carson SouleA detailed look at the alternatives to develop graphical applications on the AS/400. Included in the discussion will be graphical front ends, Java applets, VB, web interfaces and Lotus Domino. The alternatives are presented in categories identifying advantages, disadvantages, performance, security and practical experiences with each. Carson is a well-known national speaker. He is CEO of CAS in Laurel, MD. WAM owes a great debt of gratitude to Carson as he has been one of our greatest supporters from the very first JAM (held at the offices of CAS) continuing to this, his tenth year as a speaker.
