President's Message from Peter Maher

Time Keeps on Slipping ...

Time, it’s the one thing we all share at the same level and yet, even though I can’t get any more time than you, I still try to.

This month I am going to ask that you consider using some of your precious time in (my biased opinion here) an extremely constructive way. Of course I am asking you to join us as we present Mary McConnell in the only live area announcement meeting on V4R4. Not only will you be the beneficiary of Mary’s expertise but also that of your fellow users.

Time spent with our peers is time well spent. How many times have you come to a WAM meeting stewing over that one routine that won’t run or trying to configure your AS/400 printer to work or whatever only to have your question/problem solved by one of your peers? If the answer to that question is "0" then I say you are not using your time wisely.

If there is one benefit of attendance at WAM meetings that never changes it is availability of free, accurate, expert and friendly advice on anything and everything pertaining to the AS/400. The investment of two hours every month is very little when you think of all the time that we waste trying to figure everything out for ourselves.

This year especially we are all acutely aware of time (or lack thereof) as we count down the days to Year 2000.

My suggestion to all of us is take some time for ourselves, come to a WAM meeting, learn a little, laugh a little, and for a brief time enjoy the company of our peers.

V4R4 The only Update until 2000....

On February 16 WAM is proud to host the only live announcement meeting in our area. Mary McConnell from IBM will be our speaker. Mary is Senior Midrange Server Specialist with over 21 years experience.

This is the last upgrade to V4 until next year and this one is packed with "goodies".

To name a few:

  • V4R4 will support logical hardware partitions - this is especially important to Domino users running foreign language versions.
  • Improved HTTP engine.
  • Expanded digital security for E-business.
  • JAVA Enhancements.
  • New Integrated Netfinity server.
  • Mary will also fill us in on the new additions to the hardware line including the new 9406-7XX line.

JAM 99 Celebrating 10 years of Greatness!

Last week the board of directors met for the first time this year to plan JAM 99. We are very excited about this year’s JAM since it is our 10th. While we are still in the planning stages I would like to remind you that this is your JAM so now is the time to let your voice be heard. Please let one of us on the board know if there is anyone you want to see, or a topic you feel we must cover. Also let us know if there are any areas we can improve upon. We are planning some special touches to celebrate our 10th but most importantly we want YOU. So mark your calendar now Dec 3rd 1999.

-Peter

Who's on First?

Costello: Hey, Abbott!

Abbott: Yes, Lou?

Costello: I just got my first computer.

Abbott: That's great, Lou. What did you get?

Costello: A Windows system I think?!?!?

Abbott: That's terrific, Lou.

Costello: That's exactly why I'm here to see you. I heard that you're a real computer expert.

Abbott: Well, I don't know . . .

Costello: Yes-sir-ee. You know your stuff. And you're going to train me.

Abbott: Really?

Costello: Uh huh. And I am here for my first lesson.

Abbott: O.K. Lou. What do want to know?

Costello: I am having no problem turning it on, but I heard that you should be very careful how you turn it off.

Abbott: That's true.

Costello: So, here I am working on my new computer and I want to turn it off. What do I do?

Abbott: Well, first you press the Start button, and then . . .

Costello: No, I told you I want to turn it off.

Abbott: I know, you press the Start button . . .

Costello: Wait a second. I want to turn it Off. I know how to start it. So tell me what to do.

Abbott: I did.

Costello: When?

Abbott: When I told you to press the Start button.

Costello: Why should I press the Start button?

Abbott: To shut off the computer.

Costello: I press Start to stop?

Abbott: Well, Start doesn't actually stop the computer.

Costello: I knew it! So what do I press?

Abbott: Start.

Costello: Start what?

Abbott: Start button.

Costello: Start button to do what?

Abbott: Shut down.

Costello: You don't have to get rude!

Abbott: No, no, no! That's not what I meant.

Costello: Then say what you mean.

Abbott: To shut down the computer, press . . .

Costello: Don't say, "Start!"

Abbott: Then what do you want me to say?

Costello: Look, if I want to turn off the computer, I am willing to press the Stop button, the End button and Cease and Desist button, but no one in their right mind presses the Start to Stop.

Abbott: But that's what you do.

Costello: And you probably Go at Stop signs, and Stop at green lights.

Abbott: Don't be ridiculous.

Costello: I'm being ridiculous? Well, I think it's about time we started this conversation.

Abbott: What are you talking about?

Costello: I am starting this conversation right now. Good-bye.
