President's Message from Peter Maher

Welcome to the 10th Anniversary JAM!

New Years is always a time for reflection and as I look back at last year I feel a sense of satisfaction. We had some very informative meetings and a JAM that was second to none. We were able to maintain our membership base and even increased the attendance at JAM 98.

Looking at this year I am very excited about what we in JAM can look forward to. Starting this month when we will bring back Paul Lambert for a session on JAVA on the 400. Paul was one of the best-reviewed speakers last year. He is also an associate member of the Board of Directors.

I spoke with Paul last night and he told me that he plans to give us an overview of where JAVA is today and where IBM plans to take it in the future. Paul is one of the few certified JAVA instructors in the DC area so we are truly lucky to have him share his expertise with us.

This month I am also trying a slightly different format. Rather than have a buffet we will have a Light sit down dinner. Dinner will be served shortly after 6:00pm and we will start the speaker at 7:00pm. I would like to thank Rodney and the folks at the Holiday Inn College Park for their help in planning this change.

Due to this change I must ask that you Please call me with your reservations no latter than 9:00am on Monday the day before the meeting. While I can always try to add you in after that, I can’t guarantee we will be ready for you. On the other side of the coin, last year we had quite a few reservations called in where the person or persons failed to show. Folks this costs us money (yes both you and I) and we can not continue to look the other way. Therefore, I have instructed KB Soni to bill anyone who makes a reservation and does not show. (a little secret - if you reserve and find out you can’t come as long as it is before 9:00am the day before I will take your reservation off the list. Additionally I always have my phone with me so if something happens call me - we can work it out)

This year on Dec 3rd WAM is proud to present our 10th annual JAM. I am pleased that Pam Johnson is returning to her position of JAM chairman. Pam has been involved in every JAM and we are planning to make this our biggest and best ever! In order to make it the best JAM ever, we will need your help. PLEASE let Pam or I know what or who you would like to see at this JAM. Nothing is in stone yet so now is the time to let your voice be heard.

Finally, I would like to remind ALL of you that this is your group. Please know that the board and I deeply respect the trust you have given to us to make the decisions that affect your Users group. Please also know that you may call any of us with your complaints or compliments and (most importantly) your ideas,

-Peter Maher, President

January Meeting

JAVA with Paul Lambert

After a quick review of the basics of JAVA, Paul will tell us of his own experiences using it. He'll also review his experiences applying JAVA in a real world setting.

Another topic he'll cover is "What to look forward to in V4R4"

And finally, he'll give us his insights into "What's Next?"

Paul, who was recently selected to serve as an Associate to the WAM Board of Directors, has spent the majority of his career working with the IBM Midrange Family. After more than twenty years with IBM, Paul has been working for the past few years as an independent consultant and also as an IBM certified instructor. He will bring to us a great deal of hands-on "real world" experience. So come and listen to "one of us" tells it like it is.
