Tip Sheet From NEWS 3X/400These Tips and techniques are provided courtesy of NEWS/400 magazine. For subscription information, call 800/621-1544.ACCESSING NETWORK DRIVES VIA CLIENT ACCESS Q. In Client Access for Windows 3.11, you can configure shared folders. However, Client Access for Windows 95/NT doesn't appear to have a shared folders option. Can I configure shared folders under Client Access for Win95/NT, and if so, how? A. Unlike the older Client Access for Win3.1, which required you to separately configure the shared folders function, Client Access for Windows 95/NT integrates AS/400 network drive access with the Windows 95/NT operating system. Accessing network drives on the AS/400 is no different from accessing network drives on any networked PC server. Once you have an active connection to the AS/400, you can use either the Windows Explorer or Neighborhood Network functions to access the AS/400 network drives. You can also use the Map Network Drive option from the Explorer Tools menu or the Network Neighborhood pop-up menu to create permanent drive mappings. For instance, you can map drive letter I to an AS/400 folder, and this linkage will be reestablished automatically when Windows 95 is started. -- Michael Otey
Humor Column courtesy of but not created by Peter MaherSome Fun at Bill Gates' Expense Three ibm ce's and three m$ se's are going on a trip together. The three micro$oft se's purchase their tickets first. One of the IBM ce's purchases a ticket as the other two wait. The m$'ers are dumbfounded. They ask how all three expect to get to where they are going with only one ticket. The ibm'ers tell them to just watch and pay attention. As everyone boards the plane the three m$'ers take their seats as the three ibm'ers proceed to the lavatory. Shortly thereafter the stewardess passes through and collects the tickets from the m$ employees. Passing by the lavatory the stewardess knocks and asks, "Tickets please." The door inches open and out comes the one ticket. Once the stewardess is gone, the three ibm'ers emerge to take their seats. The m$'ers are impressed and decide they can do this also. When time for the return flight arrives the three m$'ers purchase their one ticket as the ibm'ers just look on. Once again the m$'ers are dumbfounded and are again instructed to watch and pay attention. Upon boarding the plane the three ibm'ers enter the lavatory and the m$'ers enter the adjacent one. At this point one of the ibm'ers emerges to knock on the door to the m$'ers lavatory and asks, "Tickets please."
Treasurer's Message1998 Membership Dues ChangesRenewals for 1998 membership are coming at a steady pace. If you are among the members who have not yet renewed, let me urge you to do so as soon as possible. There are still two more monthly meetings in 1997 and so you can save up to $50 by renewing before the next meeting. As you all know by now, the membership dues structure has been changed effective January 1, 1998. The annual dues will now be $100 and this amount will include the cost of attending the monthly meetings throughout the year. You no longer need to pay an additional $25 to attend each meeting. The feedback we have received from members has been very positive and we hope it enhances member participation. With the changes we are making we expect considerable growth in membership as well as attendance at the meetings which in turn will enable us to get even better speakers at the meetings. The Board expects all current members to renew their membership for 1998. However, we are giving an added incentive to the current members to renew early. Since the members will not have to pay to attend meetings in 1998, once you renew your membership, you will not need to pay to attend the two remaining meetings in 1997.
