President's Message from Jack Fugiel

Well, there are 915 days left before Y2000. I know you wanted to hear that and I'm sure you and your companies are either completed with or in the middle of the associated technical corrections. We will have sessions on Y2000 at this year's technical conference so be on the lookout for the early registration forms that will be going out soon. This will be our 8th annual technical conference, and is scheduled for Friday December 5th at the University of Maryland Conference Center.

Included in the group of outstanding speakers are Dave Prescott, Susan Gantner, Jon Paris, Skip Marchesani and Carson Soule. The topics will cover the current AS400 and PC related issues along with some management sessions of interest.

The topics this year will include AS400 systems management, the latest programming craze, JAVA, the popular Y2000, Windows NT, Intro to ILE and many others.

There are still some final details to work out but the preliminary grid can be found on the Internet at www.wash-midrange.org. Why not take a peek, as along with the grid are a list of our monthly speakers and other important information on our group. Our web page is maintained by Peter Maher who would be happy to hear from you with comments, questions or just plain talk.

This month will be the last meeting in our current 'full dinner' format. As mentioned in last month's message we will be changing the format to a light buffet to be served from 6:00 to 7:00 to enable everyone plenty of time to arrive, relax, socialize with other members and still enjoy the evening speaker. There will be no meeting in August and we will be using this new format in September.

Mr. Gessert, Vice President of VPE Incorporated, of Alexandria, presents the latest on developing sophisticated web-to-database applications that access DB2/400 as well as other relational databases in other environments, such as NT. VPE has worked closely with IBM to create a development platform for web-to-database apps, so it is now possible to field web-to-db applications on an AS/400 running a web server such as I/Net's Web Server/400 or IBM's Internet Connection Server. VPE's product, WebBUILDER, was featured in IBM's booth at Internet World in December as the recommended solution for developing new web-to-database applications for the AS/400.
