President's Message by Don RimaGreetings...Registrations are starting to pour in for the JAM. It's on November 4 and has a super lineup of speakers and topics. This is great lineup of speakers and topics that only comes to Washington metro once a year. All the details for JAM 2005 are on the WAM web page at http://www.wash-midrange.org/cgi/jam.pl. You must register by August 31 to get the $50 early bird discount per registration. Adding to this we've got a really good one day seminar in October on SQL and databases. If you're doing anything with SQL this is a lineup of sessions you won't want to miss. Linda Swan is coming down from the Rochester Lab for our seminar series and she's also doing the evening meeting for WAM. Since we got lots of feedback at previous JAM's about not being able to do multiple tracks at the same time, we're running this SQL/Database seminar a month before JAM so that folks can reduce their session conflicts at JAM. Details at http://www.wash-midrange.org/seminars/swan0510.shtml. If you're a WAM member and going to COMMON in a couple weeks and want so save some bucks on your fees, let us know and you can register under the WAM membership ID and save having to pay membership fees on top of conference fees. In case you didn't notice, the price of COMMON went up this year so we're trying to help you save where we can. See you at WAM on October 4. Register early and bring a friend! October 4th 2005 MeetingIntro to Query Optimizer & DataBase Engine for DB2 UDB for iSeriesPresented By Linda Swan As technology continues to invade all aspects of a company's environment, the data stored within those systems is becoming an integral asset that will help determine a company's success. The value of the information stored within the data is lost without a comprehensive database management system to manage and process that data. The iSeries has just such a management system, namely DB2 UDB for iSeries. This DBMS will allow you to process your data and turn it into valuable information. This presentation will familiarize you with the architecture of DB2 UDB for iSeries and will introduce you to the Database Engine and Query Optimizer. Linda Swan is a senior software engineer at IBM Rochester. She's currently the team leader of the optimizer component of the SQL Query Engine. Linda previously worked in the Database area in the early 90's as team leader of the SLIC journal and commit recovery team. In the number of years between her two assignments with in iSeries Database, Linda worked as a developer on database related projects involving workflow, Domino and XML.
