President's Message by Don Rima

Greetings one and all...

For starters this evening, I want to again thank Joe Pluta for his session at the April meeting on SQL - hits and myths. It was one of the highest rated sessions we've ever had. If you weren't there, you missed out big time.

But, alas, there is yet another great one coming on May 24. And since we've not got the budget to take all of us to Paris, we're bringing Paris to WAM. Jon Paris, that it. His topic will be "Essential Skills for the Modern RPG Developer". Details later on in the newsletter.

The WAM meeting will follow another of our one day seminars, also by Jon Paris, during which we're going to cover a lot of real estate yet again. Tentatively we're going to be hitting: RPG IV: Did you know - which goes into prototypes, compiler directies and other features functions you may have missed; Exploiting RPG's V5 Power Features; FREE your RPG - one of the highest attended sessions at COMMON in Chicago; RPG IV Subprocedures - Beyond the basics; and finally Brewing up Mixed RPG and Java Applications.

A full day followed by a great dinner and evening presentation. You won't want to miss this one.

Yet another warning to the slackards in our group: if you don't RSVP, we don't reserve you a seat or a dinner. So, if you're planning on coming, RSVP immediately.

Hope to see you on the 24th of May for Jon Paris at WAM.

May 24th 2005 Meeting

Essential Skills for the Modern RPG Developer
Presented By Jon Paris

Are you exploiting all that RPG has to offer? What about your development environment and toolsets? Is knowing RPG - even the latest and greatest - enough? What other skills are essential for today's RPG developers? What about SQL, XML, ILE and Java? How important are these skills for RPG developers? We'll look at these questions and suggest which are the most critical skills and how to learn them.

Jon is formerly from the IBM Toronto lab and is now a regular speaker on all things AS/400. He's a regular User Group speaker and regular COMMON speaker.
