Managed Availability: Today and the Future. Managed Availability is the methodology and a discipline under which an enterprise can deliver consistent, predictable access to data and applications, wherever and whenever it is required. It takes into account a lot of information provided by the various groups whose job it is to define where things are going and what the influences that will drive us all to have to provide various solutions in order to stay alive. A good presentation with a lot of interesting observations presented that will have relevance in everyone's world. Gary Lagarde, Solution Architect with Lakeview Technology, has over 16 years of AS/400 and iSeries 400 system-architecture experience, including hardware and operating systems, middleware, communications and client/server interfaces in the business environment. His background covers an enterprise-wide view of server-consolidation strategies, LPAR implementation, systems management, ERP infrastructure design, highly available application deployment, and disaster-recovery planning and implementation. Previously, Gary was senior technologist at Reynolds Metals Company, Richmond, VA, an $8 billion subsidiary of the $30 billion multinational Alcoa Inc., where he served as liaison to the IBM Rochester Lab for the past decade. He also co-authored the IBM Redbook "AS/400 Clusters: A Guide to Achieving Higher Availability." He is an adjunct professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business, where he lectures on management of information-systems architecture and best practices for IT/business-operations development. Gary also serves on the advisory board for VCU's Institute for Enterprise-wide Solutions, guiding the development of IT and business programs that ensure VCU graduates are well-grounded and prepared for leadership positions in technology and business. Gary has previously served as chairman of the AS/400 Large Users Group, as vice president of the J.D.Edwards One World Technical Special Interest Group, and is a member of the Common Top Concerns committee. He has also received the Business Leadership in IT Higher Education award from the Information Systems Research Institute.
