President's Message from Peter Maher

Just like Christmas, JAM is just around the Corner!

Whew! I have just finished unpacking from last month's COMMON in Baltimore and I already have to get in to full JAM mode. That’s right folks JAM is four weeks from today! If you haven’t already registered time's a' wasting! As I have said previously this JAM will be the best yet but only if you are there. And just like Christmas JAM is full of goodies. Not only the best value in eServer iSeries education but some of the best instructors as well! Speaking of goodies Don Rima has been collecting door prizes again and while I have no idea what he has I know he has a lot! For your convenience I have enclosed a copy of the grid and a registration form at the end of this newsletter. Additionally for more information go to www.wash-midrange.org or call me at 703-834-3706.

WAM makes a splash at COMMON

Last month as you know COMMON brought their semi-annual conference to Baltimore. Since WAM is the closest Local User Group to Baltimore we took on the task of managing the LUG Booth. As part of our Hospitality effort we put together a restaurant guide for Baltimore. The response was fantastic all week long people told me that the guide was a great help and made their visit so much easier. My thanks to Brett Wertz and her friends who put in the time to do all the research. We have some guides leftover and I will make them available at this month's meeting and at JAM.

This Month's Meeting

This month we are pleased to welcome Rick Clements of IBM. Rick's Topic is AS/400 Internet connectivity:

Connecting your AS/400 to the web and accessing it in a secure manner. Rick has been on the AS/400 Platform since 1989. Currently he is with IBM Global Services. Rick started his IBM career as a CE, he moved then to a Support OSR, then to IT/Specialist. Rick spends most of his time now working with customers using Lotus, Windows NT, Networking (Internet and Intranet), Client Access and Host on Demand.

Some of his current and recently completed projects are: HOD / Screen Customizer, Connecting AS/400 to Internet projects, Building CISCO powered networks and last, but not least, IBM (NT Based) Firewall installs. (Rick is a busy boy)!

This meeting is at the WestPark in Tysons.

As a reminder our annual Board Elections will be held at this month's meeting. If you are interested in running for the board and haven't contacted me please do so by Monday November 20th.

Calling all Speaker/Topic Ideas

If you have a topic or speaker you want WAM to present at a monthly meeting or if YOU want to present at a monthly meeting, now is the time to speak up. (Pun intended:) WAM is your group and we don't have all the ideas so please speak up let us know what topics interest you and we will do all we can to get your topic on the agenda. If you know of a speaker you would like to hear let us know that too we will try to get that speaker.

Additionally, if you have always wanted to be a session instructor at COMMON or JAM but need more experience we should talk! Most of the session speakers at COMMON got their start speaking to their local user group. For more information call or email Don Rima dr2@cssas400.com 703-742-3744.

Get a Jump on Your 2001 Dues

Again this year you can add your WAM dues for next year to your JAM registration. With just one check you can take care of your JAM registration AND your 2001 WAM dues - how convenient! Your WAM dues cover all the monthly meetings as well as significant discounts to one-day seminars throughout the year. Additionally you can save at least $200.00 on COMMON fees.

Not coming to JAM - shame on you but you can still get a jump on your dues simply mail your check made out to WAM to:

    KB Soni
    12023 Blackberry Terrace
    North Potomac, MD 20878
Please note that the check is for 2001 dues.

See you at the meeting and of course at JAM 2000!

-Peter S. Maher
