President's Message from Peter Maher

Summer Time and WAM is Cooking!

As I sit here in my air-conditioned office I am feeling a little reflective. So far this Year 2000 hasn't been all that bad for us. The world didn't end like some said it would, the computer systems of the world didn't crash (of course we AS/400 folks weren’t worried about that!), and WAM has had a pretty good year so far.

The good news is that some of the best is still yet to come. In August WAM is co-sponsoring a News/400 three-day seminar featuring Craig Pelkie and Jerry Ropelato.

Craig's seminars will be: Powerful SQL Tips & Techniques for AS/400 Programmers, AS/400 as a Web Server: Boot Camp, and The Power of AS/400 Data Using MS Office. Jerry's seminars will be: The AS/400 and TCP/IP: Networking & Printing, Moving Forward With ILE RPG IV and JAVA on the AS/400: Where to Begin.

This event will be held at the Sheraton Reston and will be August 29th - 31st. For more information call 800-650-1801.

In October COMMON will be coming to Baltimore! For those who have never been to COMMON this will be your best and closest opportunity to attend. From October 22-26 the world of the AS/400 will descend upon us. You won't want to miss this! For more info go to www.common.org/.

And last but most certainly not least our own 11th annual JAM 2000! This year as in the past, we will bring you the best one-day conference in the world! (Ok maybe a little bit hyped, but it is an election year:) Seriously we do believe that the JAM is the best value in education and this year we are bringing back some of the most popular speakers from years past. Carson Soule, John Paris, Susan Gantner, Dave Prescott and Terry Dimka plus more to be announced soon! So put December 1st on your calendar NOW!

July Meeting

Information security is a major issue facing organizations today. US corporations lose billions of dollars each year due to security breaches. These breaches are not always the work of hackers, but may be the result of theft of information by your own employees. Your business data is your company's most valuable asset, and you should know who is accessing your data and what they are doing with it. Information in the wrong hands can be dangerous to your organization's future! Implementing an effective security policy can be an overwhelming task and creates a major challenge for IS Managers, Auditors, and Security Administrators. With the growth of the Internet and intranets, client-server technology, client access, and distributed systems, the risk of security exposures has increased at a rapid pace. This creates a challenge for organizations to maintain consistent security while adhering to established security policies.

Among the challenges to implement and maintain consistency is securing AS/400s. AS400s used to be inherently secure. However, with the technology such as TCP/IP, ODBC, FTP, Client Access or the Internet on your AS/400s, your security can be quickly compromised, especially if you don't have your AS/400 security configured properly.

Paul Culin of PentaSafe Security Technologies will join us this month to help shed light on all of these issues. Join us in Virginia at the WestPark on the 18th for an evening that will surely be an eye opener.

Red Books on Line

IBM has published a whole slew of Redbooks on line in fact if my in box is an indication the folks in Rochester were busy this winter - what else is there to do up there! So if you are interested go to http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/ and Happy Hunting!

As a reminder WAM traditionally takes the month of August off. Happy Vacation!
